merckens development support gmbh is supporting Hirsholmen Handeskompagni A/S (HHK) in the implementation of a project in Colombia funded under the BMZ’s develoPPP program. 

Project duration 2019-2022

The aim of the project is to set a milestone in environmentally friendly banana production. By using paper-based materials on pilot farms, the use of plastic materials will be completely replaced. This will avoid more than 24 tonnes of plastic waste per year and save a significant amount of CO2 equivalents while improving the circular economy on the farm. The conversion to biodynamic agriculture will ensure nutrient cycling on the farm, promote sustainable resource management, and strengthen the farm’s resilience.

Local farmers are trained in new plastic-free production techniques and biodynamic farming methods. Networking activities at local, regional, and international level are creating awareness about sustainable production and the environmental benefits of this new production method.
